Automatic transmission

see also "two footed approach"

Managing an automatic is easy - that's what you say.

Off-road an automatic needs special attention. During crawl action as well as when parking. Also, an automatic does not have the safety advantage of parking in gear.

For easy stretches of the trail keep the automatic in "D" - as soon as it becomes more difficult, you will need to select 1st gear.

It is not sufficient to just put the automatic into "P" when you are done driving. That would create extreme stress on the automatic.

The following clip shows how to shift the automatic in "park".

After you are done driving, put foot on the main brake, put the lever in "N", activate your emergency brake, take foot off main brake and then shift into "P". Shut off engine.

When you get going again you have to follow the reverse procedure: Foot on the main brake, start engine, put lever in "N", release emergency brake, shift into "D" - or more likely when in a severe off-road setting, into "1" or reverse.
