Engine speed (rpm)
During stretches of heavy duty off-road (and that's most of the Rubicon Trail) you will need to keep the engine speed low and constant.
Very good off-road drivers are easily spotted by their constant low engine speed. A few rpm more (never more than 100 additional rpm) are OK every once in a while when needed. Sudden burst of engine speed are usually a sign of inexperience - or fear (or both).
It is safer to have your engine stall than to use too much engine speed and cause breakage. 4x4 vehicles don't not break - they are broken by their drivers.
A stalled engine always gives you a second chance to master the obstacle.Too much power often leads to broken parts and the driver stranded (no second chance).
Should your engine stall or it is about to stall - follow this procedure.
There are some opportunities on the Rubicon Trail to go faster than in first gear low range. Just shift up and pick a gear that is appropriate. Do not stay in first low range and increase your speed with high rpm. Do not use high rpm in any gear. Shift early.
There are two important reasons why you want to keep rpm down.
#1 is the fact that high rpm lead to excessive gas consumption.
#2 is that high rpm will get you hyped up. But in a challenging environment you want to stay as calm as possible.
