Vehicle shift patterns

The Toyotas and the Jeep CJ7 have been fitted with special truck transmission to provide extra low 1st gears.

The low 1st gear is extremely valuable for off-road use - but is useless on pavement. It barely moves the car and is of no benefit on pavement.

So, you will have to adopt a slightly different driving technique - you will have to start in 2nd gear.

The shift pattern is a common "H" pattern that you probably already know. 2nd is on the lower leg of the "H".

The transmissions are of a rather old design, therefore you will have to shift slowly, pausing when going through neutral (see video below). Any attempt to shift fast will be answered with gears grinding (and potentially a broken transmission) - so, take your time and be smooth.

If you should shift in a way that there is noise coming from the transmission - you are doing something wrong. But I'll help you to adapt to "mechanical sympathy".

As you notice in these images - the throw of 1st gear is much longer than in the other gears.

How to shift the automatic transmission Don't laugh - most do it the wrong way.
