The Toyotas and the Jeep CJ7 have been fitted with special truck transmission to provide extra low 1st gears.
The low 1st gear is extremely valuable for off-road use - but is useless on pavement. It barely moves the car and is of no benefit on pavement.
So, you will have to adopt a slightly different driving technique - you will have to start in 2nd gear.
The shift pattern is a common "H" pattern that you probably already know. 2nd is on the lower leg of the "H".
The transmissions are of a rather old design, therefore you will have to shiftslowly, pausing when going through neutral (see video below). Any attempt to shift fast will be answered with gears grinding (and potentially a broken transmission) - so, take your time and be smooth.
If you should shift in a way that there is noise coming from the transmission - you are doing something wrong. But I'll help you to adapt to "mechanical sympathy".

As you notice in these images - the throw of 1st gear is much longer than in the other gears.
