start steering early and gradually
One of the most common mistakes in trail driving, is steering too late and too radical. Meaning that the driver often initiates the steering process too late and then of course, since he still wants to get the truck into the intended position without stopping and starting over, he forces the steering wheel to the end of travel resulting in a squaeling steering pump and tires at a radical angle.
Much better is to start the steering process early and steer the truck gradually into the intended position. Elegance and finesse beats brute force any day.
Radical steering angles can result in a tire being pushed off the rim.
Radical steering angles are also the cause for most broken front axles - the U-joint has its maximum strength going straight, at max. steering angle its strength goes down by 40%
