Rubicon et. al.

Let me start by saying that I have not been on the Rubicon trail. However, I have owned and off-roaded 2 - Jeeps (CJ5, CJ7), Toyota 4x4, and a custom built Desert Buggy(chenowth frame, built it in college). It has been several years since I have been on the trails, work and family occupies most my time nowadays, but I am shocked and appalled to hear about the lack of respect and responsiblity that continues to persist in this sport. I am considering purchasing and building up a rock crawling jeep, but I am worried that the continuous stream of land closures throughout California will leave me with no where to play.

On the issue of driver responsiblity, Id like to comment that this is nothing new, and also, it is not indemic only to our sport. It is human nature to be disrespectfull, irresponsible and reckless in our youth and through education and community involvement we learn to overcome those shortcomings. One way the old and the wise make sure the rest of us tow line is through legislation and enforcement. If off roaders cannot find a way to control themselves and police themselves, then perhaps legislation and off road enforcement are needed. We all know it is irresponsible and illegal to speed, drink and drive, operate a vehicle in a reckless manner, and litter. However, there is no enforcement of this on the Rubicon trail.

I think we need to charge people to enter the off highway vehicle parks and trails and then use the money generated for cleanup and enforcement of the rules of the road. I have just recently returned from Yosemite Valley where the per vehice charge to enter the park is $20. Also, camping generates an additional nightly charge. I would rather pay and have a clean, fun, and safe time then to slowly watch OHV Park & Trail closures continue because we "Off-Roaders" are to inept to control ourselves and police those who cannot.

There's my one dollar's worth. (inflation)
